8 Ways to Improve your Child’s Exam Confidence
Every parent wants their child to succeed in life, and it is no secret that some children struggle more with exams and preparation than others.
Many teens are labelled as being ‘more academic’, and it is thought that they will manage fairly well with exams, while other adolescents really find the whole world of exams and revision extremely unnatural and daunting. So with that in mind, here are some tips that any parent can follow to encourage exam confidence in their child:
1. Share in their learning
Ask them to tell you what they learned about in school – encourage them to ‘teach’ you facts/figures that they have studied recently, it will encourage recall on their part and the act of explaining something to another person helps the speaker understand it better.
2. Practice Papers
It sounds old-fashioned, but getting to grips with past papers can take the daunting aspect away from exams – once the pupil learns the structure and shape of an exam, then it become familiar to them – they find they become more comfortable and confident in dealing with it.
3. Take a tactical approach
Help them learn that an exam can be approached in a clever, practical manner – they can learn to do the parts of the exam that they are more confident with at the start, giving them an impetus to try harder at the more tricky parts towards the end.
4. Sort out a revision timetable.
It’s the tried and tested way to do it. Carefully scheduling time for each subject allows for the pupil to focus on weak spots – pay more attention to what areas of revision need more work and also encourages more independent study.
5. Rewards
A young person might not yet see the actual pass or fail as a reward. If you can offer them some other reward to go alongside their aim of an A Grade, then it might offer them some more motivation and instil an air of natural confidence in them – the ‘I can do this’ feeling that is so important
6. Diet and Nutrition should have a focus.
What young people eat and drink can have a MASSIVE effect on everything from how well they concentrate in class, how good their working memory is and even how they vary in mood – which can subsequently affect how their wellbeing is on the morning of an important exam. Encouraging them to eat and drink healthily gives them all the ammunition they need for their brain to function well.
7. Get them to take regular breaks when revising
Studies have shown that when we feel upset, tired or anxious, we retain less information. So if your child is getting frustrated when they are revising, you should encourage them to take regular, structured breaks, to physically move away from their study space and take part in another activity, get fresh air, a snack or play a game. They are more likely to return to their studies with a refreshed attitude.
8. Structured Revision
By enrolling onto a revision course you are ensuring that your child will receive well structured, expertly delivered teaching that will cater to your child’s revision needs. Our revision courses offer an in-depth look at exam knowledge and techniques.
