5 Good Habits for Exam Success

The idea of ‘revision’ and the start of a new term might make teenagers recoil to the depths of their duvets!

However, exams can be made a whole lot easier if students learn to adopt some good habits- from the ‘get go-‘ to help them on their way to exam success!

We offer a number of events throughout the school year to support students sitting National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams.

1. Get organised, Don’t cram

Make use of a planner or calendar. Most schools provide students with these anyway- so it shouldn’t be a new idea- but whether all students make the best use of them might be questionable! Suggest your teen manage themselves with short ‘to do’ lists; write in any deadlines; write down ‘countdowns-‘ if that helps.

2. Develop a plan for studying.

When will your teen begin implementing revision into their day? Many might say ‘the earlier the better,’ but some students might find if they ‘over-work’, they are burnt out by the time the exams come around. Try and find a happy balance: start with an hour a few nights a week, and gradually build this up as exam season looms. Have ‘revision days’ and ‘break days.’ We run intensive revision courses over the school holidays- precisely for this reason- to get students ‘stuck in’ to their revision in a balanced way.

3. Getting enough sleep is key to exam success

It sounds like a nag, but the importance of sleep probably can’t be emphasised enough in the exam years. Encourage your teen to adopt a wise ‘body clock’ (if they don’t have one already!) Getting to bed at a sensible time will lead to a refreshed brain… And a refreshed brain will help students retain what they need to know; absorb learning, and create a healthy routine!

4. Recall and understand their own notes

Another good habit is for students to put ideas into their own words. As their learning continues, there is no doubt your teen will come across things that leave them feeling a little stuck. Encourage your teen, in the first instance, to address what they’re stuck on by asking teachers or subject specialists. Suggest to your teen to make a note of what they’ve understood- there and then- and in their own words. They will really thank themselves later if they can recall and understand their own notes!

5. Structured Revision

It can be difficult for students to possess the willpower and discipline to work efficiently at home with the distractions of social media, games consoles and other streaming services. By booking a place on revision courses you, are ensuring that your child will receive well structured, expertly delivered teaching that will cater your child’s revision needs. Our revision courses offer an in-depth look at exam knowledge and techniques.
